Social Justice Student Film Fest

The LMC Social Justice Student Film Fest is an annual event held in the Spring to showcase documentaries created by students. SUBMISSIONS FOR THE ’23 FESTIVAL ARE OPEN!! 

The event will be held on April 21st, 2023 in the John Lewis Student Center.

Log Line: ...September 12th meets the artist Nabil Mousa and one of his most famous works, Judgement Day, a collaborative, reflective work with the community about September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks. Filmed in Atlanta, Ga, the artist’s creative process & reasons for his work are explored while trying to find the line between the artist and his artwork.

Logline: On ...the night of September 16, 2017, Scout Schultz was shot and killed by a Georgia Tech police officer. As their death was a ‘suicide by cop’, many of Scout’s closest friends on campus have begun to push for greater awareness of LGBTQIA issues and policy reform on campus.

LGBTQIA students report significantly higher rates of bullying at school, with 86% reporting harassment compared to 27% of all students. Queer and trans students are also two to six times ...more likely to self- harm or commit suicide. These issues are exacerbated in the South, where 35% of LGBTQ people live amongst some who still hold strong negative prejudice towards queer and trans people. One proposed solution is an LGBTQIA-exclusive or focused school. Pride School Atlanta is in its inaugural year of providing a safe place for such students, and the school is the first of its kind in the Southeastern United States. We spoke to educators, scholars, counselors, and students to answer the question: are Pride schools an effective method to reduce discrimination against LGBTQIA students and improve their schooling experience?

The gaming community can be considered “toxic” for female players, and ...

The gaming community can be considered “toxic” for female players, and we aimed to identify and explore the reluctance of female players to even refer to themselves as gamers. When ...women play these multi-player games, they are often met with harassment and discrimination. Their username, avatar, and voice are all “giveaways” to male players that they are in the company of a female. Through our interviews, we asked women about these experiences and their opinions on gaming culture, as well as how they think it could evolve to be more inclusive to such a large portion of the community, so that women no longer feel the need to use gender-neutral usernames or avoid speaking during gameplay, and can speak about gaming without being written-off by male gamers.
